Nininja the Calligrapher

Hello everyone! Sorry for the lack of posts the past few weeks. If you follow me on Instragram, you'd know that I spent the first week of March in Cambodia to celebrate my birthday. Then after that, I got semi obsessed with practicing calligraphy, hence the lack of posts :(

Since I haven't downloaded my trip photos from my camera yet, I'll talk about my newest addiction first, Calligraphy.

As you know, I went on a basic modern calligraphy workshop given by La Bella Scrittura a few weeks ago. I learned the basic principles then but I realized Calligraphy isn't really about knowing how to, it's more of practicing it until you get the hang of it by yourself.

I had such a hard time with dip ink calligraphy before and the only writing tools I had was a straight pen holder, a Tachikawa G nib and a bottle of walnut ink. I figured it would be better if I had more supplies so I can play with different nibs, ink and maybe try an oblique holder. So I decided to get me the Ink Scribbler basic calligraphy set from Craft Central.

The kit costs PhP2,000.00 and has everything a beginner needs plus extra. It had 6 different nibs which allows me to see which one I like best and it comes with an oblique pen holder too!

The kit is very useful but I found that the Scribbler manual didn't have enough practice sheets. I wanted a kit with different font types so I can see which style suits me the best. So I decided to look around the web for other resources.

I chanced upon the Postman's Knock where I was able to purchase a .pdf guide for the Kaitlin style calligraphy for USD5.00. It was indeed a bargain and buying it was so easy. I paid for it through paypal then the confirmation email gave me a link to download the file. It was very convenient indeed :)

The site also has a lot of other worksheet sets for sale. I'm already considering what to purchase next but for now, I'll focus on getting the hang of the font.

I'm still adjusting to dip ink calligraphy but I find that practice do make perfect. It's about muscle memory and just getting used to writing with a nib.

On my spare time however, I do faux calligraphy, which The Postman's Knock also taught me to :P

For that, I just used a Zig Le Plume, which is basically like a two-ended marker with a semi flexible tip and a fine point pen. It is fake calligraphy but as Lindsey of The Postman's Knock mentioned, knowing how to do faux calligraphy is also a good skill to have for times you don't have your tools or have to write on walls with chalk or paint.

I still have much to learn as my strokes aren't smooth yet but I'll get there :) I try to practice as much as I can and hopefully, next time I post about calligraphy, it'll be to show you all the beautiful works I've created :)

Hope you're all having a great month so far!

Birthday Candles

...only these ones, you wouldn't want to blow out.

I was just telling you about my birthday wishlist and what have you, my boyfriend was such a dear and sent me these candles for my birthday even before I posted my wishlist!

Presenting, my candle obsession, Diptyque candles:

Diptyque is legendary French perfumer and maker of luxury scented candles. The candles are a celebrity favorite and I know it may be too much for a regular person like me, but believe me, if you can splurge on these, then please do because burning Diptyque candles is a one of a kind experience in itself. The scent is just so unbelievable!

My boyfriend got me the 3-set pack with Baies, Figuier and Roses. Based on their descriptions on the website, Baies expresses the irresistible freshness of a bouquet of roses, sweetened with blackcurrant leaves. Figuier has the warmth of the bark, the freshness of the leaves, and the milky sap of its fruit. And Roses is like a tender, freshly picked bouquet, it pays homage to the queen of flowers. Of the three, Baies is my favorite :)

On the website, the set of three retails for USD$90.00.

Thank you so so much EJ for the wonderful gift! You made me super happy! These are candles that would keep on being lighted not just on my birthday but all month!

Happy 1st of March everyone! Happy birth month to me! :)
